The rules are simple:

• Game rules are the same as for team bocce. First player to score 21 points wins.
• Each player rolls 4 balls
• Players arrange a time (and place) to play their game between themselves.
• The game can be played on any mutually agreed upon Bocce court
• Game winner reports the score to Frank by the cut-off date for each round.

There will be modest prizes awarded to the two players who reach the finals. Some local businesses were kind enough to donate the prizes. Hopefully all who read this will look upon them with more favor than otherwise. They are:

The 2013 match schedules (teams and singles) will be published on Monday, May 13.  But on Saturday, May 11 they will be distributed to everyone who helps with annual court maintenance . . . along with lunch and beverages!

The season will start May 27 and run through August 30 (14 weeks).  The top two teams from each night advance to Finals, the week of September 2.

Here are the details:

• Teams can have up to 12 members (with a minimum of 4 members. A team of 5-7 is ideal)
• Games will be held Friday evening at 6:00 and 7:30 (typical game lasts about an hour) at the bocce courts on the NW Park Blocks, near Park Kitchen Restaurant.
• Regular Season starts the week of May 27th and goes through August 30th (14 weeks). The top two teams from each night advance to Finals Week, the week of September 2nd.
• The season culminates with the Championship Picnic and End-of-Season Party (catered, included in the annual League fee) on September 5th, 2013.
• Annual League fee includes entry for individuals into the PBLA Singles Tournament, if desired.
• The League will provide regulation bocce balls (2 sets, to be passed between the night’s teams).
• Cost per team will be $225 (a $100 discount from the regular fee).

Catherine Leedy began the meeting by thanking all the Captains who attended the Capo meeting on Feb 20th.
As a result of the Captains’ feedback the league announced these changes for the 2013 Season:

* No team moves to another night at the half

* We play each team twice

* All game scores count for the finals

Sign-up for the PBL Singles Tournament was offered.  Frank Blaszak encouraged all members to sign up and discover the reward of “singles play”.  51 people signed up with at least another 8 who have verbally committed but were not in attendance to register.  The cut off will be when 64 players have registered.

Larry Cereghino, the US Bocce Federation rep. and Youth Coordinator for the West Coast section reported that Bocce is growing fast, especially on the West Coast.  USBF has a youth program at Dexter McCarty Middle School in Gresham that is a success.  Larry encouraged us to post pictures to the USBF website at   www.bocce.com.

All PBL past presidents were recognized with much applause.  Those in attendance:  Bill Marinelli, Dick Ponzi, Alan Grinnell, Jack Elder, Jonathan Nicholas

Adam Reese as new President took over the meeting:  Catherine Leedy and Becky Trullinger  were thanked for service along with the new PBL Board.

Glenn Devitt  of The Ralph Boccios (Monday) will take over for Josh Rich as PBL’s new Web Master.

Announcements:  A Court Maintenance Day will be scheduled sometime in May, be expecting further info.

A call was made for members willing to volunteer for roles in the following matters: Team Expansion, Maintenance, or League Expansion.

The Annual General Meeting

Please come prepared for registration with a check payable to Portland Bocce League for $325.  Returning team will have priority for their regular night of play, and first option of new openings for other nights.  Please let your team members and friends know that we are adding Friday evenings to the league at a very special introductory rate of $225 for the season.

You will note a slight increase in dues from last year.  Our court fees continue to increase each year, and we are building some reserves for long term projects including court resurfacing.

The board is still seeking candidates for the Treasurer position on the board.  If interested, please use the form on the contact page.

On Tuesday, September 4th, the second round of Quarter-Final matches will begin promptly at 7:15 PM. All matches will continue to be played to 21 or to the point at which time has been called. Time (last frame) for the 6:00 PM Quarter-Final matches will therefore be called at 7:05 PM. The Semi-Final and Championship matches will have no time limit.

Congratulations to Becky Trullinger and Brad Cotton for rolling their way through tough competition and four challenging matches to emerge as the finalists.

As a reminder, the 2012 Singles Tournament Final will be played at 5:00 PM on Thursday, September 6th prior to the Team Championship at the End-of-Season Picnic. For the Becky and Brad, a $100 certificate to Riccardo’s Restaurant in Lake Oswego will be awarded to the champion, and a $50 certificate to Park Kitchen will be awarded to the championship runner-up. Good luck to both finalists!
