New Business
Proposal for Group Play / Double Elimination. The Board discussed a new schedule and configuration for Group Play, which included teams competing within 4 seeded groups. While the Board liked the proposal, it was determined that the introduction of new season dates and new play configuration so close to the start of the 2010 season was not feasible. It was recommended that this approach be considered for the 2011, with inputs from Capos prior to adoption.
2010 Season Dates. The 2010 Portland Bocce League Season will start on Monday, June 7, and include 9 weeks of regular play – ending July 29. (Regular play will occur for the week of July 4.)
Tournament elimination play-offs start August 2. Final championship playoff PLUS the end of year party will be Wed, August 25.
ACTION: Jonathan will draft a note informing teams of season dates and their night of play.
Portland Bocce League 2010 Rules. A sub-committee of League members chaired by Alan Grinnell reviewed a set of recommended changes for the 2010 season, such that the Portland League will be in general compliance with rules by the US Bocce Federation. The following recommendations were approved by the Board:
- Retain current 2009 language regarding foot faults
- Adopt proposed language re volo throws: i.e. balls must be rolled
- Define “frame” as 1 scoring period
- Include notation that team rosters should be a minimum of 4 players and a max of 12; players can participate on 1 team only; final team rosters need to be submitted by the first day of play
Rules will be posted on the League website.
For the future, it was noted that the League might develop and articulate a set of recommended practices that constitute “Bocce Court Etiquette” similar to those in golf, e.g. no walking on the court during play, players should not leave the court area while a game is in progress. These could be posted on the League website, as a separate document from the League Rules
New League Website. Josh is completing work on a new website that may include direct captain input for scoring, FAQ’s, team rosters.
ACTION: Jonathan & Jack will contact Ricardo’s in support of Josh’s efforts.

Entrance fee will be $15 per head – we anticipate 64 entrants. Frank will organize and officiate the tournament. Registration checks can be mailed to the League PO Box. Round 4: Aug 9 for 1 week
Round 5: Aug 16 for 1 week

Final Singles Championship will be held the same evening as the Team Championship: Wed, August 25. Ricardo’s Restaurant in Lake Oswego has donated a $200 gift certificate for dinner to the winner.

PBLA 2009 Season Wrap Up
Jan 1st
Final Results:
Gold: La Tazze Rossa
Silver: Red Barn Rollers
Bronze: Bocce Brats & Pallos de Fuocco
The 2009 Portland Bocce League season came to an end August 26th with an outstanding picnic and just over two hundred attendees at the North Park Blocks courts watching the final game between La Tazze Rossa and Red Barn Rollers. The regular season of round robin play for each night of league ended July 16th. In the following weeks the double elimination tourney format reduced the remaining teams from the original thirty-two to eight. Due to difficulties of scheduling and outright conflict in past years the Leagues board of directors adopted a plan to end the season before Labor Day weekend in a series of single elimination games in Finals Week.
Finals Week
Finals Week began Monday August 24th with four games to 17 points. In the 6:00 PM games Pallos de Fuocco, Monday Champions, defeated Magnifico the second place team of Tuesday, and Red Barn Rollers, Thursdays second, defeated Campo de Bocce, Wednesday Champions to move on to the quarter finals on Tuesday. In the 7:30PM games La Tazze Rossa, Thursday Champions, defeated Bocce Dios, Monday runner up, and Bocce Brats, Wednesday’s second, defeated Have a Ball, Tuesday Champions to advance. Monday the 25th was Medal Day. All teams remaining were guaranteed medals, both losing teams would receive Bronze Medals and the winners would play for Gold and Silver. With games starting at 6:15PM and no time limit Red Barn Rollers defeated Pallos de Fuocco and La Tazze Rossa defeated Bocce Brats to qualify for the Gold Medal game on Wednesday. In a night of firsts, first time two teams from the same night made the finals, first time a team from Thursday, the night for new teams in the League, made it to the finals and the first time for a one game final and picnic La Tazze Rossa defeated Red Barn Rollers for the Portland Bocce League City Championship. Many thanks go out to all who contributed to the success of the season. The marvelous dinner for the Finals picnic was catered by the Women’s Association Club represented by Becky Trullinger and several other players in the League. All the volunteers who showed pre season to do the necessary maintenance, the Board of Directors who agreed to try the new format and to you, all the players who enjoy the wonderful game of Bocce.
